Journalist James “Jim” Foley missing in Syria for more than 100 days
Nearly 10,000 people worldwide have signed an appeal for Foley’s release

BOSTON, March 4, 2013 – The people holding journalist James “Jim” Foley should provide information about his whereabouts and well-being the Foley family said today.

John Foley, father of Jim, said, “We have not heard from Jim for more than 100 days. We want Jim to come safely home and we need to speak with him to know he’s okay. Jim is an objective journalist and we appeal for the release of Jim unharmed. Someone in Syria knows what happened to Jim and we hope they will contact us.”

On Nov. 22, 2012, unidentified gunmen kidnapped Foley, 39, near Taftanaz, in the Idib region of Syria near Turkey. Jim has reported independently and objectively from the Middle East for the past five years working freelance for GlobalPost and Agence France-Presse, among other media outlets. Prior to his work as a journalist, Foley helped disadvantaged individuals as a teacher and mentor assisting them in improving their lives.

The Foley family has had no information about Jim’s well-being or who is holding him captive. A website, www.freejamesfoley.org, features additional information in English and Arabic, photos and an appeal for his release.

The people of Syria and the surrounding region are asked to come forward and provide information regarding Jim Foley.

About James Foley

James Foley is a freelance journalist and conflict zone reporter. In the past, he has covered conflicts in Libya, Afghanistan and Iraq. Foley is well known for his independent, fair and objective reporting. For more information visit www.freejamesfoley.org.

When Sunday Times reporter Marie Colvin and photojournalist Remi Ochlik were killed in Homs, Syria, the bloody conflict had regularly been the front page of every newspaper, day after day, for many of the previous months.

Evidence from eye witnesses, including Sunday Times photographer Paul Conroy who was working with Marie, said that they had been deliberately targeted. Journalists are no longer protected by a vest that says “Press”.

Colvin had been interviewed on CNN describing the death of a young child following an attack on civilians had been.

Conroy told BBC News after she was killed that he believes this was the final straw for the Syrian regime who then took the decision to eliminate the journalists working in the makeshift Press Centre in Homs.

In Libya there were dozens of journalists covering the conflict, today in Syria there is barely a handful . Newspapers, broadcasters, websites are not prepared to risk the lives of their staff while the risk is so great.

His Family is Using Social Media Advertising to Seek Information

BOSTON, Mass. – Feb. 5, 2013 – The people of Syria and the surrounding region are asked to come forward and provide information regarding the location of journalist James “Jim” Foley. Today’s announcement is part of a comprehensive publicity campaign using traditional media as well as Facebook and Twitter to generate information about Jim’s location from the Syrian people and others in the region.

Through social media advertising the Foley family is publicizing their search for Jim and for information about his location. Jim was last seen near Taftanaz, Syria on November 22, 2012 in the Idib region of Syria near Turkey.

The advertising on social media is intended to reach people in the Syrian region who may have information about Jim’s location. “Social media has transformed how people communicate and share information,” said John Foley, the father of Jim. “Our family believes that someone in Syria knows what happened to Jim, where he is located and we hope that person contacts us.”

The International press Institute reports that 132 journalists were killed around the world in 2012, the highest number since the IPI started recording journalists’ deaths in 1997 and one that underscores the increasingly insecure international landscape faced by journalists covering conflicts.

Covering the mounting violence in Syria in recent months has been particularly dangerous for Western journalists. Over two months have passed since armed gunmen abducted American journalist James Foley in northern Syria. He was on his way out of the country, trying to reach the Turkish border. Foley was reporting for several news outlets, including the AFP and GlobalPost, and today there is still no news about his exact whereabouts or the group responsible for his kidnapping.

WASHINGTON — The family of an American reporter who contributed videos to Agence France-Presse (AFP) appealed for his release on Tuesday, the two-month anniversary of his kidnapping in Syria.

James Foley, 39, an experienced war reporter who also freelanced for US-based media outlets, was seized by armed men in the northern province of Idlib on November 22, according to witnesses.

AFP presented a letter Monday evening in Damascus to Syrian Information Minister Omran al Zohabi addressed to President Bashar al-Assad, seeking his assistance in finding Foley.

“I am seeking your assistance in a matter of a purely humanitarian nature,” AFP chairman Emmanuel Hoog said in the letter to Assad.

“I humbly request that you intervene on his behalf and do everything in your power to shed light on his fate and to obtain his release, in the name of freedom of expression and of the press,” he said.
